A maker named mircemk has built a simple DIY star-finder device by mounting a green laser pointer and a smartphone on a flat plate attached to a tripod. The smartphone runs AstroHopper, a GPS and inertial navigation astronomy app that shows a labeled sky view. By aligning the phone and laser axes, users can point the combo at any celestial object on screen, activate the laser, and follow the green beam with binoculars to locate the target. The build adds an external battery and on/off switch for convenience. It's a low-cost, practical entry in Hackaday's 2026 Frikkin' Lasers Challenge, which runs until July 23, 2026.
