A maker named Jason has built a 3D-printable split-flap display with high positional accuracy. The design uses a 28BYJ stepper motor paired with a magnetic encoder to precisely stop at each character position. Flaps are fully 3D printed using a technique that enables two-color output even on single-color printers, and are mounted on a planetary gear set. A five-character version is controlled by a Raspberry Pi Pico, with multiplexer expansion suggested for larger displays.
