AI Didn’t Make Programming Easier. It Just Made It Differently Difficult – Communications of the ACM

AI coding assistants are not making programming easier — they are redistributing its cognitive demands. By acting as external memory systems, these tools reduce the burden of syntax recall and boilerplate generation, but raise the stakes for judgment, architectural reasoning, and code evaluation. Four major shifts are identified: programming becomes more accessible to newcomers, but producing good code grows harder; the difficulty moves from recall to judgment; education must shift toward systems thinking over syntax memorization; and the programmer's role evolves from knowledge vessel to orchestrating agent who validates and directs AI-generated output. The core argument is that cognitive load is relocated, not removed — the hard part moves from 'how do I write this?' to 'does this actually make sense?'
