Alibaba reportedly bans employees from using Claude Code

Alibaba is banning employees from using Anthropic's Claude Code starting July 10, citing security concerns after the tool was classified as high-risk software. The ban follows reports that a version of Claude Code contained functionality to secretly identify Chinese users — which Anthropic acknowledged was an experiment launched in March to prevent account abuse by unauthorized resellers and stop model distillation. Anthropic says stronger mitigations have since been implemented. Alibaba is directing employees to use its own Qoder tool instead. This comes amid Anthropic's broader efforts to close loopholes allowing Chinese users to access Claude, as the company already prohibits Chinese companies from using its models.
