All Your GUCs in a Row: enable_partitionwise_aggregate

PostgreSQL's enable_partitionwise_aggregate GUC is unusual in the enable_* family because it defaults off rather than on. Partitionwise aggregation, introduced in PostgreSQL 11, pushes GROUP BY operations down into individual partitions instead of aggregating a combined stream. When the GROUP BY matches the partition key, each partition produces final results independently; otherwise, a two-stage partial/finalize approach is used. The feature defaults off because it multiplies work_mem-bounded aggregate nodes by the number of partitions, potentially causing large memory spikes on tables with many partitions. The recommended approach is to enable it selectively — per-role or per-session — for analytical workloads that group by the partition key on large partitioned tables, after verifying with EXPLAIN ANALYZE that the pushdown plan is actually faster and the memory cost is acceptable.
