Alleged Scattered Spider hacker extradited to the United States
Peter Stokes, a 19-year-old dual U.S.-Estonian citizen, has been extradited to the United States after being arrested in Finland in April. He is accused of being a member of the Scattered Spider hacking collective, allegedly participating in at least four breaches including attacks on a luxury retailer in May 2025 where hackers used social engineering to reset credentials and demanded an $8 million ransom. Scattered Spider, active since 2022 and composed largely of teenagers and young adults, has been linked to over 100 network intrusions resulting in more than $100 million in ransom payments. The group is known for MFA bombing, SMS phishing, and social engineering tactics, with victims including MGM Resorts, Caesars, Marks & Spencer, and many others. Stokes faces charges of fraud, conspiracy, and computer intrusion.
