Amazon EC2 announces AMI Watermarks for improved AMI governance

Amazon EC2 now supports AMI Watermarks, a feature that lets you embed custom identifiers into private AMIs. These watermarks automatically propagate to all derived AMIs — whether copied across regions or created from running instances — and remain visible when shared with other accounts. Each watermark carries metadata including AMI ID, owner ID, region, and creation timestamps. Combined with the existing Allowed AMIs feature and Declarative Policies, organizations can restrict instance launches to only approved AMIs and enforce governance at scale. The feature is available at no additional cost in all AWS regions, including GovCloud and China regions, via the AWS Console, CLI, or SDKs.
