Apricot Computers was a British PC manufacturer that designed machines in Birmingham and built them in Scotland during the 1980s and 90s. They were notable for shipping the first 486-based PC in 1989 and for actually delivering Microchannel PCs in quantity when competitors only announced them. A 1990 BBC Troubleshooter episode revealed their core struggle: expensive UK-based R&D and manufacturing made them uncompetitive against Asian-built clones. Their profitable software and maintenance divisions didn't depend on hardware manufacturing, leading to the eventual sale of the hardware business to Mitsubishi Electric in April 1990. The remaining ACT Group was acquired by Misys in 1995 for £212 million. Even with 35 years of hindsight, there was no obvious path to survival given the competitive pressures of the era.
