Cloudflare and AWS Embed x402 Agent Payments at the Edge

Cloudflare and AWS have both implemented the x402 open protocol for stablecoin micropayments at their edge networks within two weeks of each other. The protocol revives HTTP's dormant 402 status code to enable agent-to-service payments without redirects, account creation, or API keys — the payment itself acts as the credential. Settlement uses USDC stablecoins on Base at sub-cent transaction costs via Coinbase's x402 Facilitator. AWS CloudFront's integration is generally available now; Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway is waitlist-only. The x402 Foundation, under the Linux Foundation, counts AWS, Cloudflare, Anthropic, and 20+ other members. Coinbase reports 169 million transactions in year one. Key unresolved issues include enterprise VAT/invoicing compliance for anonymous stablecoin payments, and whether AI agents will simply use free or synthetic data instead of paying for gated content.
