Counterfeit Retro Mainboards With Fake AGP Slots Are A Thing

A retro PC builder sourcing parts for a Pentium 4 build discovered a counterfeit Asrock P4i45GV motherboard purchased on Facebook Marketplace. The board had no real markings and turned out to be a clone featuring a fake AGP slot — actually Asrock's 'AGI' slot, which connects to the PCI bus rather than a true AGP bus. This caused spotty GPU support and driver issues. Worse, the slot is keyed for 1.5V AGP cards but exposes them to potentially fatal voltages due to the underlying 3.3V-only PCI implementation. These counterfeit boards appear to be genuine old hardware made at the time to deceive buyers, and the problems they caused decades ago continue to affect retro collectors today.
