Cybersecurity is no longer about protection. It’s about survival.

The prevailing 'assume breach' mantra in cybersecurity is contradicted by how most organizations actually budget and operate — still treating prevention as the primary goal. The argument here is that cybersecurity must shift its strategic center of gravity from protection to survival: breach readiness, continuity, recoverability, tested incident response, and organizational resilience. Regulatory frameworks like DORA, NIS2, and the EU Cyber Resilience Act are pushing this direction explicitly. AI accelerates attacker capabilities and compresses response windows, making prevention-first strategies increasingly untenable. AppSec is reframed as a resilience discipline, not just a bug-finding exercise. CISOs need real authority and budget to design for survival, and boards that fund only prevention while expecting resilience after failure are engaging in denial. Resilience is a cross-organizational responsibility spanning engineering, procurement, legal, finance, and executive leadership.
