Did My Test Suite Just Kill the GitHub Actions Runner!?
A debugging story about a test suite that crashed the GitHub Actions runner itself. The root cause was adversarial security tests forking child processes that inherited the runner's internal Worker-Listener IPC pipe (not marked close-on-exec), writing garbage bytes into it and corrupting its length-prefixed protocol. Two red herrings preceded the real bug: a cache keyed on existence rather than version serving stale binaries, and hardcoded container paths failing on a bare runner. The fix is an isolating launcher that closes all inherited file descriptors above 2, runs the suite in its own process group, and kills the group on exit to prevent orphaned observers from hanging the CI step's stdout pipe.
