Echolocation For Drones

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have developed a bat-inspired echolocation system for drones using low-power ultrasonic sensors. A dual sonar array, combined with a propeller-noise-blocking shield and neural network signal processing, enables drones to navigate in environments where radar, lidar, GPS, or computer vision struggle — such as forests, smoke, and snow. The prototype was tested in simulated and real-world environments, and all code and hardware designs are open source.
