Eskom frees a million customers from load reduction

Eskom has removed over 1.1 million customers from load reduction schedules, with five of South Africa's nine provinces now entirely free of the practice. Load reduction — distinct from load shedding — involves deliberately switching off specific feeders in areas where illegal connections, meter tampering, and demand growth overload local networks. Progress has accelerated sharply since February, when only 140,000 customers had been freed. The programme, targeting 971 feeders serving 1.69 million customers, aims to clear seven provinces by October and eradicate load reduction nationally by March 2027. Smart meter deployment is central to the effort, enabling remote management of non-paying customers and protecting revenue in high-loss areas.
