Every Laptop Is a Credential Store: Complete Map of Hidden Secrets
Developer laptops silently accumulate credentials across dozens of locations — shell history, ~/.aws, .env files, SSH keys, package manager tokens, AI agent caches, and browser session storage — none of which are visible to Git-based secret scanners. Modern infostealer malware specifically targets these paths because the credential density is extremely high. The post maps all eight major credential storage locations on a developer machine, explains why traditional repo and CI scanners miss them entirely, and outlines a remediation approach: inventory first, prefer short-lived credentials, reduce footprint, vault consistently, rotate on discovery, and extend scanning to the endpoint. It also highlights that AI coding agents now account for over 40% of secrets found on developer endpoints, as agents generate and write credentials without human involvement.
