Ex-Tesla Optimus scientist launches UMA to build Europe’s humanoid robot

Rémi Cadene, a former Tesla Optimus AI scientist and ex-Hugging Face LeRobot lead, has launched UMA (Universal Mechanical Assistant) from Paris to build Northstar, a lightweight AI-powered humanoid robot targeting European manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare markets. The founding team includes veterans from Google DeepMind, NYU, and the open-source robotics community. UMA emerged from stealth in December 2025 with backing from Greycroft, Kima Ventures, and advisers including Yann LeCun and Thomas Wolf. The company is in talks with ~50 potential customers and plans pilot programmes in 2026, betting that European industrial demand and open-source software expertise can compete with well-funded American and Chinese rivals.
