Fibertime, the pay-as-you-go township fibre network founded by Alan Knott-Craig, has demonstrated gigabit download speeds (1Gbit/s) on its network in Alexandra, Johannesburg — well above its advertised 100Mbit/s plan priced at R5/day. The company now covers 470,000 connected homes across 53 townships in 13 cities, making it the third-largest fibre network operator in South Africa by connected homes. Fibertime plans to upgrade all its networks to gigabit capacity within 12 months. The service uses Nokia fibre access nodes, Wi-Fi routers with load-shedding batteries, and R5 vouchers sold at local spaza shops instead of monthly contracts, backed by Nokia, Finnfund, and Rand Merchant Bank.
