Nokia dominated the global cellphone market for 14 years, selling its billionth phone in 2005 and producing the best-selling handset in history with the Nokia 1100. When Apple unveiled the iPhone in January 2007, Nokia held an internal meeting the very next day and recognized the threat — but struggled to respond effectively. Its first touchscreen phone, the 5800 XpressMusic, arrived 18 months late and lacked multitouch. Nokia's first multitouch device didn't ship until 2010, three years after the iPhone launch. Meanwhile, Android eroded Nokia's stronghold in the low-end market. A 2011 internal memo from CEO Stephen Elop bluntly acknowledged the company had no product close to the iPhone experience. Nokia pivoted to Windows Phone with its Lumia line, then sold its entire handset division to Microsoft in 2014 for a fraction of its peak value. Microsoft wrote down $7.6 billion the following year. Nokia survived by pivoting to telecom infrastructure and is now a top-three global supplier of 5G network equipment.
