How to Achieve Pruning When Querying by Non-Partitioned Columns in PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL partition pruning normally only works when filtering by the partition key column. This post demonstrates how to achieve pruning on non-partition key columns (like session_id on a timestamp-partitioned table) by adding carefully crafted CHECK constraints to each partition. When session IDs are strongly correlated with timestamps, you can define session ID ranges per partition, and PostgreSQL's constraint_exclusion mechanism will eliminate irrelevant partitions at query planning time. The post also addresses outliers (e.g., long-lived sessions spanning partitions) by using multiple OR-joined ranges in the constraint, inspired by PostgreSQL's multi-minmax BRIN index operator. A gaps-and-islands SQL query is provided to automatically generate the appropriate constraint DDL.
