A guide to using compact 3-digit 7-segment LCD displays in a DIP package. These displays have two quirks: non-standard pin spacing that doesn't fit breadboards cleanly, and a more complex driving scheme than LED displays. Unlike LEDs, LCDs require polarity-swapped signals each cycle and inactive COM pins held at half-voltage. The solution uses an ATtiny84 microcontroller with a voltage divider and the three pin states (high, low, high-impedance) to generate the three voltage levels needed. Software cycles the display at ~60 Hz for flicker-free operation.
