Paul Kocyla is building a mechanical television system using only parts that would have been available in the 1920s. The project features a wooden chassis, period power supply and amplifier, synchronous motor, and a Nipkow disk. A notable finding involves early directly-heated cathode tubes that 'blink' at 120 Hz when fed AC power, solved by using period copper oxide rectifiers to supply DC to the heaters. The build is still in progress, with a neon lamp yet to be sourced — specifically the flat-plate type made for this application.
