A home lab enthusiast discovered the Loop Detection (LPD) feature on their managed TP-Link and Zyxel switches after years of ignoring it. Switching loops — caused by multiple Layer 2 paths between devices — can trigger broadcast storms and high CPU usage. Enabling Loopback Detection causes the switch to send a specialized frame that, if returned, identifies the loop and automatically blocks the offending port. The feature works well for access ports and unmanaged downstream switches but is not suitable for trunk ports carrying multiple VLANs, where Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is the better alternative despite its link establishment delay.
