Raspberry Pi 5 IOMMU Driver Being Worked On For The Mainline Linux Kernel
Open-source developer Daniel Drake is working on a Broadcom BCM2712 IOMMU driver for the mainline Linux kernel, targeting Raspberry Pi 5 support. Adapted from Raspberry Pi's downstream driver, the patch series includes page table management via generic_pt, standards-compliant DT property names, removal of a dma-iova-offset workaround, and wiring up the display controller IOMMU for efficient graphics memory management. A known limitation is that the driver works strictly with 4KB pages, causing 12KB waste per page table allocation when the kernel uses the RPi 5 default 16KB page size — a fix is planned as follow-up work. The driver has been tested on Raspberry Pi 5 with a 3D-accelerated graphical environment and is currently undergoing code review for mainline inclusion.
