The real reason SA graduates can’t get hired into tech jobs
South Africa has over 40,000 unfilled junior ICT roles despite thousands of graduates entering the market annually. The core problem is not a lack of qualifications but a shortage of work-ready talent — specifically, graduates who lack the confidence and practical experience to perform in real workplace environments. Research shows self-efficacy is a strong predictor of employability alongside hands-on experience. Work-integrated learning (WIL) is identified as the key mechanism to build that confidence through 'mastery experiences,' but only when programmes include structured mentorship, gradual progression, and meaningful feedback. A DigiLink pilot achieved a 90% absorption rate into permanent employment. The call to action is for employers, training providers, and policymakers to scale high-quality WIL as a strategic priority in South Africa's digital skills strategy.
