Ubuntu is swapping its time sync tool for a Rust-based version

Canonical is sponsoring the Trifecta Tech Foundation with €40,000/year to fund ntpd-rs, a Rust-based rewrite of the NTP daemon, with plans to make it Ubuntu's default time sync client in Ubuntu 27.04. It will be available for testing in Ubuntu 26.10 (October). The switch is part of Ubuntu's broader 'oxidising' initiative to replace C-based system tools with memory-safe Rust alternatives, following the earlier adoption of sudo-rs in Ubuntu 25.10. Eventually, ntpd-rs will also replace chrony, linuxptp, and gpsd for time-syncing use cases.
