Qantas's Project Sunrise aims to eliminate stopovers for Australian travellers by launching ultra-long-range non-stop flights from Sydney and Melbourne to destinations like London and New York. The airline has ordered twelve Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, specially configured with an extra rear fuel tank and reduced seating (238 passengers) to cover routes up to 22 hours non-stop. The first aircraft is due for delivery in April 2027, with daily Sydney–London non-stop service beginning October 2027. The initiative addresses a longstanding pain point for Australians, who currently endure multi-leg journeys and lengthy layovers to reach major northern hemisphere cities. Cabins will feature a dedicated 'Wellbeing Zone' to help passengers cope with the extended flight durations.
