Brown University researchers developed a minimal wake-vortex simulation model to explain how migratory birds fly in V formations. Using northern bald ibises with live-bird measurements for validation, the model shows that birds in the leader's wake reduce their flapping amplitude, achieving roughly 11% energy savings. The model captures the complex vortices generated by flapping wings and can predict efficiency of various in-flight configurations. Beyond biology, the findings have practical applications for drone swarm design and other aerial vehicle formations.
