eMedia has launched Openview Stream, a free ad-supported streaming (FAST) platform, in seven African markets — Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and Mauritius — but not in its home market of South Africa. CEO Khalik Sherrif explains that South Africa's high data costs make the FAST model unviable there, as continuous streaming is too expensive for consumers compared to on-demand VOD. The company's eVOD service will continue serving the South African market for another two to three years. A South African launch of Openview Stream is estimated to be about three years away, partly contingent on Starlink being licensed to operate locally. The platform targets up to 20 channels per market, mixing eMedia-owned content, local news and entertainment, Indian content dubbed into local languages, and international general entertainment.
