3D Printed Piano Action Faithful To The Original

A maker known as dovetail built a 3D printed hybrid piano action using compliant mechanisms - solid parts that flex in controlled ways to mimic the movement of a traditional piano's internal key mechanism. The design is modular, with daisy-chained PCBs supporting groups of keys and infrared sensors turning key presses into MIDI signals, producing digital sound while preserving a real mechanical action feel. It was demonstrated at Open Sauce, and future improvements planned include switching from IR to hall effect sensors, refining the action, and trying a different filament.
