Advancing the Open Lakehouse with Apache Spark, the Delta Kernel, and the new UC Delta APIs
Delta Lake 4.4.0 advances the catalog-managed table architecture with new features across Delta Spark, Kernel, UniForm, Sharing, and Flink. Delta Spark now defaults to Apache Spark 4.2 (while still supporting 4.1.0 and 4.0.1), and adds identity/generated columns in SQL DDL, SHOW PARTITIONS support, and VOID column preservation. Pairing with Unity Catalog 0.6.0 enables governed metric views over catalog-managed Delta tables. Delta UniForm now supports atomic Iceberg metadata initialization at table creation, though delta-iceberg_2.13 in 4.4 only targets Spark 4.1, not 4.2. Delta Flink adds version-specific artifacts for Flink 2.0.2 through 2.3.0, primary-key upserts from Flink SQL using merge-on-read and deletion vectors, keyed changelog reads from Kafka (demoed with RedPanda), and support for the UC Delta API.
