Another IKEA Product Yields An LED Matrix

The IKEA Kortlinje, a $20 digital clock with a hygrometer and thermometer, turns out to use a white LED matrix display driven by three VK1640 LED controllers, making it an attractive hacking target. Hobbyists at the RevSpace hackerspace in the Netherlands and a GitHub user known as VIPnytt have already begun reverse engineering it, with early firmware work underway. The device's unidentified microcontroller can reportedly be desoldered and swapped for a custom one, giving hackers access to I2C and the LED drivers to control the display directly.
