Telstra's July 8, 2026 nationwide outage, which knocked 8.8 million Australians offline, traced back to an aging Microchip Technologies SSU 2000 NTP server in Melbourne. An undocumented configuration change had it pulling time from an internal GPS card instead of a Stratum 2 reference, and the unit carried a well-known GPS date rollover bug. When a technician rebooted it during power maintenance, it reported the date as 2006, cascading bad timestamps downstream and causing systems to reject certificates as expired. Telstra had ignored patch reminders from 2020 and 2022 and a vendor warning dating to 2000, choosing in January 2026 not to fix the bug because the undocumented GPS reliance was unknown. Full recovery took until 4 PM, with rail networks also affected and hundreds of Triple Zero emergency calls failing despite carrier camp-on failover to Optus and TPG.
