A home-shop technique galvanizes steel and iron parts with zinc without using strong acids, instead dissolving sodium hydroxide and metallic zinc into distilled water, adding sugar and liquid soap for finish quality, then electroplating with a graphite anode and the workpiece as cathode. The caustic solution still requires safety precautions, but it handles irregularly shaped parts with deep crevices better than acid-based methods, and the coating can be brightened afterward with mildly acidic citric acid.
