A DIY builder tired of wasting aluminium billet while milling internal combustion engine parts switched to lost PLA casting. He built his own kiln from cement, perlite, and a propane burner, sourced cast-suitable aluminium alloy from old wheels, and turned it into ingots. Using 3D printed PLA shapes embedded in sand-reinforced Plaster of Paris molds, he burned out the plastic and cast an engine cylinder with only minor imperfections, illustrating why manufacturers favor casting over machining for such parts.
