Edison Motors Offering All-Mechanical Trucks, At Least To Start

Canadian startup Edison Motors is initially selling its BDE-series big rig truck with a conventional Cummins diesel engine and 16-speed transmission rather than the series-hybrid diesel-electric drivetrain that first drew attention. The hybrid version, planned for later release, will pair a 500kW Scania diesel generator with electric motors rated at a combined 1800kW peak, plus a large battery. The strategy is meant to generate revenue and prove engineering credibility while avoiding the fate of Nikola, whose failed electric semi-truck program the company literally tows around as a cautionary symbol. Edison also plans to offer its hybrid drivetrain as a kit for smaller trucks.
