GM’s Experimental EV From 1969

GM's XP-512E was a 1969 experimental electric commuter car, one of three drivetrain variants (gas, hybrid, electric) built on a shared fiberglass-bodied, steel-chassis two-seater platform. Limited by lead-acid battery technology, the 1,250-lb vehicle topped out at 30 mph with a 50-mile range. Neither it nor AMC's rival Amitron reached production, but both reflect 1960s efforts to combat urban smog from V-8 sedans through alternative drivetrains, including brief exploration of steam power.
