Last rites for Gentoo's Chromium package
Gentoo's Chromium package has been given "last rites" after maintainer Sam James declared it unmaintained following a contentious bug-report thread where a user complained about hundreds of unpatched vulnerabilities in the outdated ebuild. Maintainers described Chromium as the most maintainer-burning package in Gentoo due to its complex build system, bundled Rust and Go dependencies, unreliable upstream release tarballs, and Chromium's aggressive weekly/biweekly release cadence. Matt Jolly, a maintainer since 2023, detailed that upkeep requires over six hours a week and multiple skilled volunteers across C, C++, Go, JavaScript, and Rust; using Google's own toolchain would simplify things but drop support for arm64, ppc64, and RISC-V. The package is masked until October 24, after which someone could still reclaim it, but Gentoo users are left to use overlays like Bentoo, the Flathub Flatpak, or alternative browsers such as ungoogled-chromium, Ladybird, or Servo.
