A DIY project motorizes the height adjustment wheel on a DeWalt planer using a stepper motor capable of about 1000 steps per inch, allowing precise, repeatable thickness control. The build progressed from a simple maintenance shortcut into a full programmable system with modes for multi-pass planing to a target thickness, zeroing, saving height presets for replication across boards, and stepping through set amounts per pass. The creator plans to eventually package the control system with a PCB and enclosure for other woodworkers.
