Music Is Back On Optical Disk In This Plex Server

With SSD and HDD prices rising due to data center demand, using high-density BDXL Blu-ray discs (including archival M-discs) as storage for a Plex music server is explored as a cost-competitive alternative. Once metadata is cached, M-discs are fast enough for lag-free music streaming. A 100 GB disc holds thousands of FLAC tracks, and the write-once nature of optical media also protects data from accidental deletion by AI agents. The cost advantage may be temporary, but currently makes optical storage worth considering for music libraries.
