Saturn’s South Pole Is Apparently Decagon-Shaped

Astronomers have identified a ten-sided decagon pattern at Saturn's south pole, mirroring the well-known hexagon shape at its north pole. Published in Science Advances by Agustín Sánchez-Lavega and colleagues, the finding suggests the shape arises from standing waves in Saturn's polar vortex. Unlike the north pole hexagon, which is driven by a strong eastward jet, the south pole decagon appears to result from a meandering wave rather than a jet, making the pattern less pronounced. The discovery offers new insight into fluid dynamics at a planetary scale.
