Sovereign Tech Agency Providing Massive Investment Into Flatpak

Germany's Sovereign Tech Agency, via its Sovereign Tech Fund, is investing €508,640 into Flatpak development over the next two years, running through the end of 2027. The funding will strengthen app sandboxing and expand the portal system, including new PipeWire audio portals, network isolation features, a VPN portal modeled on Android and iOS APIs, and a spell-checking and writing-assistance portal. Password auto-fill is also being explored. The work includes a new 'entitlements' system for static permission declarations, 'intents' for declaring offered services, and ongoing maintenance of existing portals. This follows earlier Sovereign Tech Agency investment in GNOME that also benefited Flatpak.
