A maker found a cheaper alternative to expensive continuous carbon-fiber printers by reinforcing FDM prints with subsurface carbon-fiber cloth. The method involves printing parts in three pieces — a core and two outer shells — with a small gap filled with epoxied carbon-fiber cloth. Load cell testing on printed hooks showed this technique more than tripled yield strength compared to standard prints. Single-strand fiber embedding methods showed no improvement, while the cloth composite approach significantly outperformed controls. Caution is advised when handling carbon fiber due to potential asbestos-like health risks.
