Strengthening Rust Infrastructure Security with Ubuntu Pro
The Rust Foundation has adopted Ubuntu Pro across parts of its infrastructure fleet to improve security posture. Key benefits include Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM), which extends LTS support from 5 to 10 years and adds security patches for Universe repository packages, and Livepatch, which applies kernel security fixes without requiring reboots. The integration was done via Ansible so new EC2 instances activate Ubuntu Pro by default, with unattended-upgrades handling periodic patching. This is especially important for services like docs.rs and Crater that run untrusted community code, and for shared dev desktops where privilege escalation vulnerabilities could turn a limited compromise into a serious incident. Canonical donated 25 Ubuntu Pro subscriptions to the Rust Foundation to enable this.
