A hobbyist built a custom 3D printer using a syringe pump extruder to print with liquid materials like silicone and epoxy, submerging prints in a shear-thinning support bath made of mineral and vegetable oil thickened with fumed silica. The technique, called embedded 3D printing, keeps liquid extrusions in place until they solidify. Early tests with silicone (Sylgard 184) disintegrated on removal, but a two-part epoxy Benchy held together and survived cleanup in isopropyl alcohol, showing decent shock resistance afterward.
