Vacutainers use a sealed vacuum tube and a specially designed needle housing to draw blood quickly and cleanly for lab testing, replacing older syringe-based methods. The tubes come with color-coded stoppers indicating different additives (anticoagulants, chelators, growth media, or separating agents) tailored to specific tests. The technology traces back to 1947, invented by Joseph Kleiner after witnessing his wife's suffering from repeated blood draws, reaching market in 1949, with plastic versions later developed by Becton Dickinson in the 1960s.
