John von Neumann's life traced the roots of modern computing, game theory, and quantum mechanics, drawn from Ananyo Bhattacharya's biography 'The Man from the Future'. Von Neumann's 1945 'First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC' laid out the stored-program architecture still used in virtually all computers today. He proved the minimax theorem in 1928 and co-founded game theory with Oskar Morgenstern in 1944. His 1952 Caltech lectures on building reliable machines from unreliable components seeded fault-tolerant computing ideas like Paxos. He also invented the Monte Carlo method, built the first cellular automaton to model self-reproduction, and in 1955 wrote about surviving technological risk, including early mention of global warming and the concept of a technological 'singularity'.
