A video by Hyperspace Pirate explores tuning the alpha value in a DIY Fischer-Tropsch reactor to control hydrocarbon chain length from syngas. Alpha depends on reactor temperature and pressure. Low alpha values finish the reaction quickly and produce mostly methane, while higher alpha values build longer carbohydrate chains. The reactor uses an iron-based catalyst packed into a steel tube, started with a heater that's later switched off. Early runs appear to have yielded a few mL of pentane and hexane, with the rest apparently gaseous methane and ethane, pointing to a fairly low alpha. The piece suggests using a high alpha to produce crude for distillation might be simpler than targeting a specific hydrocarbon.
