Cotton-Fiberglass Composite Makes Lightweight RV Countertops

A maker built lightweight RV countertops using a cotton-fiberglass composite technique. Instead of traditional glass or carbon fiber, printed Japanese cotton fabric is used as the decorative outer layer, with a single fiberglass layer beneath it for protection during sanding. The core is a sandwich of two 3.6 mm plywood sheets with XPS foam between them, all bonded with clear epoxy resin. The plywood provides structural strength, reducing the need for multiple fiber layers. The finished larger countertop weighs only 2.4 kg (5.2 lb), making it significantly lighter than cement or resin tile alternatives. Multiple coats of epoxy and careful sanding produce a smooth, shiny surface.
