Thingino Teaches Cheap IP Cameras New Tricks

Thingino is an open source Linux-based firmware for IP cameras built on Ingenic SoCs, supporting 166 devices including popular Wyze cameras. It replaces proprietary cloud-dependent software with a feature-rich alternative offering RTSP streams, motion detection, MQTT integration, VPN support, Home Assistant integration, timelapse recording, and full SSH access to the underlying Linux system. The easiest entry point is the $10 Cinnado D1, which supports a simple SD card flashing process. For more stubborn devices, installation may require a USB-to-serial adapter or external flash programmer. The firmware is compared to DD-WRT for routers in terms of how dramatically it elevates a cheap consumer device.
