Variable Refresh Rate "VRR" Target Limiter Proposed For Linux Graphics Drivers

Collabora's Nicolas Frattaroli has proposed a new Linux user-space API and a set of 25 RFC kernel patches to let games, applications, and compositors specify frame rate targets for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) handling. The interface allows a constrained range or fixed target for VRR to avoid brightness flicker while keeping judder-free, low-latency presentation, and adds a Quick Media Switching (QMS) connector property so displays like TVs can be warned of upcoming rate changes ahead of time without disabling advanced processing. The patches add Game Mode VRR support to HDMI state helpers and the Rockchip RK3588 driver, and there's a companion vrr-limiter branch for the Weston compositor. The topic was also discussed at this year's Display Next Hackfest, and the RFC patches are posted on the dri-devel mailing list for community feedback.
